Summary

The last of Sony's curved Trinitron TV's sold in North America, the 20S90 was introduced in 2001 as a replacement for the KV-20S42. Is essentially the same as its predecessor, but with side-mounted speakers.

Notes

This TV was is superficially similar to the KV-20V80, but without that model's extra features.

The jungle chips used in BA-4 and BA-4D chassis Trinitrons are very versatile. As such, these TVs can be modified for RGB, Component video, and S-Video inputs. When modified, picture quality on these TVs is exceptionally sharp. The RGB mod procedure is essentially the same as the KV-20M42 mod described below:

RGB Mod

The RGB modding process for this model is the same as the 27" models with a few slight differences:

  • the resistor locations are visually similar, its just the numbers are different.
  • the spot for blanking is slightly different too (and I provided an alternative switchless blanking solution if you want).
  • This chassis does not have a horizontal position switch (so you'll have to deal with composite being off-center after you calibrate via service menu for RGB input centering)

Below are some pictures of how I modded this one for reference:

  • OSD resistors removed:

  • Standard wiring with switched blanking injection:

  • Alternative wiring with switchless blanking injection (5v injected via 1K resistor from input switching TTL line. Use front "Video 2" composite jack for injecting sync if you follow this wiring)

  • Marking the holes for BNC jacks (use standard grid paper, 2x2 box for each jack and 1x1 gap between each jack)

  • BNC Jack wiring

  • Finished result
